Tips on Finding a Local Dentist

It is important that everyone sees a dentist regularly to keep your gums and teeth healthy. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. If diagnosed in its early, it can be treated and reversed. If treatment is not received, one may develop a more progressive stage of gum disease called periodontitis.

If you are new to an area and looking for a dentist, the following tips will make your search much easier:

1. If you have a dental insurance, your provider may be able to provide you with a list of dentists in your area. There are many insurance websites that provide a search tool which allows people enter their address and search for dentists in their area.

2. There are free online dentist sites that provide you with the tools to search for a dentist in your area. They also help people find a dentist that will accept your insurance plan.

3. Ask for referrals from family, friends and coworkers. They will be able to give you more detailed and personal information about the dentist such as the dentist’s personality and how well they treat patients

4. Search for dentists that have certifications from professional organizations like the American Dental Association.

5. Talk to several local dentists to see what they are like. You can also try a couple of different dentists to compare and then make a final decision about which dentist you will stay with. When you find a dentist, be sure to ask the proper questions. It is important to know there location, hours of operation, emergency numbers, etc. Ask for estimated fees on preventive visits and some common procedures such as dental cleaning and filling a cavity.

6. Check with local hospitals as well as any health care organizations that use a dentist. Their dentist should be able to recommend you a great dentist in your area. If you are moving, you can talk to your current dentist and see if he or she has a recommendation.

7. Online dentist directories are another great place to locate local dentists.

8. Visit individual dentist websites. You will acquire information on the dentist’s education, experience, certifications, specialized training and more. You will also learn about office hours and map direction.

9. If you need specific dental care find out if the dentist is qualified such as if the dentist is a general dentist, cosmetic dentist, endodontist, or other dental specialties. A general or family practice dentist is chosen when there are not any specific dental conditions.

You will have a long-term relationship with your dentist so it is important that you choose a dentist that you are comfortable with. Don’t wait until you have a toothache before you find a dentist.

There is a great deal that people can do to reduce the likelihood of dental problems:
    - Flossing (this is one that us folk over here in Britain are particularly bad at statistically speaking)
    - Brushing twice a day
    - Avoiding sugary drinks and food
    - Living in an area in which fluoride is added to the water supply (according to the British Fluoridation Society)
    - Not using screwdrivers, paperclips or your feet to remove items lodged between your teeth! (see the British Dental Health Foundation’s 2006 survey)
