Can meal replacements help overweight diabetic patients lose weight effectively and keep it off? That was the question that Lawrence J. Cheskin and colleagues from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (Baltimore, Maryland) tried to answer in their recent study “Efficacy of Meal Replacements versus a Standard Food-Based Diet for Weight Loss in Type 2 Diabetes,” published in The Diabetes Educator.

Increased Rates of Type 2 Diabetes

High numbers of Americans are clinically obese with the number increasing each year. Approximately 66% of adults in the U.S. are overweight with about half of that number designated as obese. The higher obesity rate correlates with an increase in type 2 diabetes. The link between type 2 diabetics and obesity is clear with 70% of that population being overweight and 33% labeled obese. Over 18 million people in the U.S. currently experience type 2 diabetes with the number expected to go up dramatically. By 2050 the estimated number of people with type 2 diabetes will rise by 165% [1].

Weight loss is recognized as an effective method to manage or prevent type 2 diabetes. When patients lose even 2% of their body weight, they can see positive indicators in many health markers. Those who succeed in their efforts to lose weight most likely account for lower numbers in mortality rates for type 2 diabetics. However, achieving weight loss for this group is difficult. Most obese people find that losing weight is a challenge, but it is even more difficult for those with type 2 diabetes [2].

Are Food Replacements a Viable Alternative for Weight Loss?

The main objective in Cheskin’s study was to compare weight loss success and specific results in two groups. The groups were taken from 126 adult screened volunteers. One group followed a standard food-based diet while the other group used a food replacement supplement.

Groups included men and women from 18 to 70 years old with BMI numbers ranging from 25-40. Overweight and obesity rates were determined by body mass index. A BMI of 25 was considered overweight while a BMI of 32.2 represented obese. One purpose of the study was to see if either method could produce results of at least a 5% weight loss in obese patients with type 2 diabetes. The possibility of using a food replacement supplement as a viable tool to manage type 2 diabetes was also a focus.

The two groups involved in the study followed one of two diets. One group followed a standard diet using foods recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The other participants were prescribed Medifast Plus for Diabetics meal replacement for their portion-controlled diet. This food supplement contains soy-based products low in sugar with a low glycemic index [3]. Both diets had similar calorie content and both groups experienced a 25% calorie reduction in their diet. Each diet offered 45-50% carbohydrates, 25-30% fat and 15-25% protein.

What Were The Results Of The Study?

Following 34 weeks of weight loss, the standard diet group stayed on the same diet plan with the same guidelines for an additional 52 weeks. The food replacement group, however, broke into two groups. Each used the food replacement diet and the standard food diet alternating after 26 weeks. The nutritional value in the diet prescribed to both groups was similar. The standard diet group got all their allotted calories from whole foods using choices on the ADA list. The food supplements participants got about 50-60% of calories allowed through the Medifast meal replacement.

BMI

After 34 weeks, results showed better BMI numbers for both groups. However, the BMI numbers in the food replacement group were significantly lower than the standard diet group. Weight loss for the food replacement group was 6.84% compared to the standard diet number of 3.70%. In addition, food replacement participants dropped 5% of their starting weight. Fasting blood glucose and triglycerides also improved for the group using the supplement while the other group showed no significant change. Cholesterol numbers improved for both groups and ranged in lowering percentages from 2.5-4.4%.

HbA1c

The levels of hemoglobin HbA1c reveal how effectively glucose is controlled in the body. Glucose in diabetic patients is considered under adequate control if HbA1c is less than 7%. At the 34-week mark, almost 3 out of 4 food-replacement participants presented HbA1c below 7%. Specifically, the Medifast supplement group achieved an average of 74.2% of members gaining acceptable glucose control. The other group did not have a significant change in their HbA1c. In fact, the standard-diet group numbers were lower at 35.3%.

Blood Pressure

At 34 weeks systolic and diastolic blood pressure showed much lower numbers for both groups.

Waist and hip measurements also revealed improvement. The food replacement group reduced waist circumference by 6.5cm and hips by 4.1cm. The standard diet participants decreased waist size by only 4.1cm and hips by 1.6cm.

Psycometrics

The area of psychometrics measuring levels of depression, appetite, satisfaction with diet, or a sense of being deprived due to diet noted no significant difference between the groups.

Participants Reduced Dependence on Medications

After the 34-week weight loss phase, retention of people in the study was much better for the food replacement group. They retained 57% of participants compared to 29% in the standard food group. The food replacement members also noted several people who were able to reduce a need for medication to control the disease. In contrast, the standard-diet group’s medication needs remained the same.

Study Supports Potential of Supplement Use

As previously noted, successful weight loss is difficult for obese people with type 2 diabetes. It’s important to note that success rates are often poor. However, meal replacements show that the features of convenience, built-in portion control and easy use may prove beneficial to this group [4]. More members of the food supplement group remained in the study than the people eating a standard diet. That could indicate future potential in using food supplements in some of the so-called best rated weight loss plans for type 2 diabetes.

Several important achievements occurred in the study for participants using a food supplement diet. Li Z. has reported similar findings to support meal replacements as a weight loss tool for type 2 diabetes patients [5]. Members of the food replacement groups achieved an important goal of reducing the need for some medications. Taking less prescription medications is a positive indicator. Most importantly, those succeeding in losing weight with the food supplement diet reported an overall improvement in the quality of their lives.

The above results were presented in the annual meeting of American Diabetes Association. It is important to note that Medifast, the company that makes the meal replacement products that where used in this study, supported the project with its own grant. However, the authors reported no financial interest in the products mentioned.

What on earth has being overweight got to do with being in debt?

They might not seem connected, but in fact, Dr. Eva Münster from the University of Mainz, Germany, and an international team of researchers have recently demonstrated that there is a significant association between being deeply in debt and the likelihood of being overweight.

Dr. Münster’s research was aimed at assessing the health status of individuals who are significantly in debt and their access to and use of health services. The number of people carrying serious levels of personal debt has risen dramatically in both Europe and the United States in recent years, and the current worldwide economic crisis increases that number every day. In Germany alone, more than 6 million people are estimated to owe more money they can afford to pay back and are facing serious cutbacks in their standard of living. The fear is that adequate health care may be one of the prime targets for cutbacks. As healthcare costs continue to rise and charity-based healthcare organizations also suffer from the economic downturn, access to healthcare may be limited for people who are financially strapped.

Dr. Münster’s report, “Over-indebtedness as a marker of socioeconomic status and its association with obesity,” was published in August 2009 in the journal BMC Public Health. She and her colleagues compared two separate study groups:

949 people who had consulted debt-counseling services were surveyed anonymously. This group was classified as “over-indebted.”

8318 adults who responded to a telephone survey that addressed a variety of health, economic and quality-of-life issues. This group was classified as “not over-indebted.”

Comparable information about age, sex, income, education, body mass index (BMI, an index of overweight that is based on a person’s height and weight), smoking history, and depression was gathered for both groups. The combined study sample totaled 9080 people, after those for whom no BMI data was available were excluded.

Participants were asked to report their height and weight, and that information was used to calculate their BMI. World Health Organization standards were used to classify individuals from both groups; people were rated as overweight if their BMI was higher than 25, and as obese if their BMI was over 30. The group of people who were in need of debt counseling were classified by definition as “over-indebted.” The researchers then performed a series of analyses to determine whether there seemed to be a significant correlation between weight and debt among these people.

The statistics

Among the study subjects, people deeply in debt were statistically more likely to be:

younger;

less educated;

lower income;

depressed;

smokers;

overweight or obese.

Men and women were equally likely to be in debt.

In the study group, it was also noted that the overweight people were more likely to be:

male;

over 40 years old;

depressed.

People with more education, higher incomes, or who smoked were less likely to be overweight or obese.

The implications

The study results showed that people deeply in debt had a higher risk of obesity than most other people. And that increased risk did not seem to have anything to do with an individual’s overall socio-economic status as judged by traditional measures. Education, income, sex, age, depression and smoking levels–none of these factors seemed to explain this higher risk.

Why is it, then, that being in debt makes it more likely that a person will be obese?

One factor is that people in debt have less money to spend on daily needs and are less able to afford or even get access to healthy foods. People with limited funds can easily gravitate toward consuming more of cheaper and widely available “junk” foods. Because these foods tend to be high in fat and sugar, they can be more filling and immediately satisfying than a handful of carrots or a piece of fresh fruit.

People also often turn to these kinds of foods in times of stress and depression as a form of comfort food or surrogate gratification (like smoking). But while smoking is associated with lower weight, convenience foods and junk foods are big contributors to obesity. Owing money you can’t pay is most certainly stressful. Stress causes secretion of glucocorticoids (GC), a class of steroid hormones. GC stimulate drive for and ingestion of “comfort foods” and have been linked to increased food consumption, according to studies by Dr Dallman. So perhaps it is not so surprising to find that over-indebted people are more likely to be either overweight.

When debt causes people to cut back on spending, too often the things they cut are likely to be health-related. Membership at a health club or gym may be classed as a “frill” to be eliminated, but if it means that person is less likely to keep active and get exercise, it can have a negative impact on both health and weight. Lower quality foods are unfortunately often less expensive than healthy foods, and people who live in depressed areas or have limited transportation can find it hard to get to full-service or specialty markets where fresh foods are available.

It’s not a new observation that poverty and lower socioeconomic status often go hand-in-hand with poor nutrition and increased obesity. But debt has not been traditionally included as one of the markers of economic wellbeing. Dr. Munster’s study suggests that this factor needs to be taken into consideration in understanding people’s health risks–particularly in these days of rising debt and financial strain.

Matt Denos is a biologist at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. As a research scientist he closely follows the relevant scientific literature and enjoys writing articles that contain newsworthy information in the field of nutrition, diet and obesity. His website contains information on weight loss programs and offers Nutrisystem promotion codes and discount coupons for BistroMD, two diet plans available in the US.

Many people around the world struggle with hemorrhoids. According to experts fifty percent of all Americans may get hemorrhoids by age 50. That is truly a staggering amount. Lets face it, most people who have hemorrhoids are usually too embarrassed to talk about them.

Don’t be shy about it, and don’t feel ashamed of going to the doctor for hemorrhoid treatment. The odds are that some of your friends may also have hemorrhoids, so support each other.

To help you get started here are some natural ways to treat hemorrhoids:

1. Eat More Fiber – Adding more fiber to your diet will help by reducing pressure on your rectal veins.

2. Drink Plenty Of Water – Water is excellent for helping you have a more relaxed bowel movement. Along with fiber it helps clean the colon.

3. Relax During Bowel Movement – Try not to strain too much during a bowel movement, doing so may make hemorrhoids worse.

4. Keep The Weight Off – Staying slim and exercising also helps reduce pressure on your rectal veins.

5. Creams – You can also try some over the counter creams. Although I would recommend you talk to a doctor first.

As you can tell not only will the tips above help you in treating hemorrhoids, but they are also good for your over-all health and well being.

You should always start with natural treatments before deciding to get surgery or any other procedures done. Surgery is always more risky do to the fact that it is surgery after all.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that one treatment may not work for everyone. We are all different, and we all may have different types of hemorrhoids.

The best thing to do is too experiment with a few treatments to see which one gives you the best hemorrhoid relief. Don’t limit your self to only the 5 treatments we have mentioned above, do some research you will find plenty more.

Many of you have heard about the Swine Flu that has been going around, and you are wondering about how to protect yourself and your family against the Swine Flu Pandemic. Many of you may not know exactly what the Swine Flu is, or even how it originated. Right now we will go over some of the basics about Swine Flu.

The scientific name for Swine Flu is the H1N1. This virus began in 2009 where it first began to infect people with this illness. It started in April 2009. The virus was spreading world wide exactly the same way that the influenza would have spread. Since the H1N1 is considered to be a variation of the influenza. On June 11, 2009 the WHO, World Health Organization, put up the red flag signaling that the Swine Flu is now known as an epidemic.

You may be wondering why the H1N1 virus is often referred to as the Swine Flu. This is quite simple to explain. They did several laboratory tests that showed that this influenza showed similar genes to influenza that commonly affects the swine, pigs, of North America. They did some further laboratory studies and they have found that this virus has both genes from two different influenza’s combined. The influenza was found to be from the swine in North America, and has also been found in the avis, which means bird, from Asia. We have heard of the bird flu before right.

Scientists call this virus a Quadruple Reassortant due to the fact that there are multiple variations of the virus that are combined together.

Now we will go over some of the ways that you can protect yourself, and your family, from the swine flu.

The first tip which is possibly the most important tip you can get to prevent from any illness would be to wash your hands constantly. Wash them after you have touched something that several other people have touched.

You should also cover your mouth when coughing, not with your hands, but with the crook of your arm since you will be touching things. That way if you might have happen to have it then you will not spread it to any one else on purpose.

If any way possible try to avoid touching your eyes, your mouth, or your nose since this is the way that virus’s are spread. Also another obvious tip I can give you is to try to stay away from sick people, because you can sometimes get it from them if they have it plus it would be an extra precaution for you to observe.

If you are running a fever the CDC recommends that you take it easy, and stay at home until your fever is gone. Unless you are going outside to seek some form of medical assistance. Since this would be very inconsiderate of you to do during this time of epidemic.

You should follow some of the public health advice in trying to avoid places with lots of people in that area. This would mean that someone in the vicinity of you might have the virus.

You should be prepared just in case that you do get sick since you will have to be isolated for about a week or so. Plan ahead by always having a week plus amount of food and amenities located in your home. Don’t forget to bulk up on that toilet paper because you might be in for a surprise then. You should have a supply of over the counter medications, hand sanitizers but make sure that these are alcohol based, and even tissues. If you think about it there should a whole list of things that you should locate and purchase for that just in case situation.

Now you know a little bit more on how to protect yourself from the swine flu, and even what to do if you were to get the swine flu yourself. Just remember that your health is the number one priority so take precaution wherever possible.

Real relief has been experienced by many patients using natural ibs treatments. Irritable bowel syndrome has uncomfortable symptoms caused by dysfunction in the digestive system. Griping pain along the gastrointestinal tract is caused by the intestines squeezing either too hard or not hard enough. Diarrhea or constipation, feeling unwell and a lack of energy are common symptoms.

It tends to appear around the 20 age group and is a problem that affects women more than men. There is no known cure for irritable bowel syndrome because it is not classified as a disease. It is generally considered to be an effect caused by bad diet or stress or a combination of both of these things and Ibs treatments that ignore these issues have no chance of success.

There are ibs treatments that will reduce the effects considerably. Patients that experience this change do regard it as a cure. Irritable bowel syndrome is not life threatening although it can be a continuing problem throughout your life if you let it. Enduring the suffering will only reduce the quality of your life so try to to change your diet as your first call.

Switching to a fiber diet can make life even more uncomfortable as this will cause an increase in gas. A combination of protein and fiber using fresh ingredients rather than prepared food (ready meals) can make a huge difference. Eat regular meals every day as this has a calming effect that aids digestion.

The second call should be to confront your stress factors and try to move the pressure down by learning relaxation techniques. Your doctor could advise you on this if irritable bowel syndrome has been confirmed. Difficult emotional situations in relationships that cause constant anxiety or stress can also be helped by counseling or therapy.

Natural ibs treatments can loosen the bowel which can again make things worse. One such remedy is Slippery Elm which has a good reputation as an effective treatment for digestive problems. Patients who suffer constipation as part of their experience of irritable bowel syndrome have reported this as a miracle cure. If diarrhea is your experience then avoid this method.

Other ibs treatments include aloe vera which is also considered a reliable and effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. Recent ground breaking pharmaceutical research has developed a means of preserving the purity of this plant in a pill as well as removing the laxative component that has been the unacceptable ingredient for some people.

Several patients claim real relief from the debilitating symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome so although there is no medical prescription cure you can certainly make life more comfortable just by applying these suggestions. Taking part in your own ibs treatments could change your life.

What are the common causes of diabetes?

Many studies pointed that diabetes is caused by extra fat in the diet as well as the body. Contrary to the popular believe, sugar is not the only culprit that contribute to the disease.

A leading medical school in the United States made a study on a group of healthy young men. They were fed with a 65% fat rich diet. In less than 2 weeks they developed mild diabetes.

Another group similar to that was given a 10% fat diet and one pound of sugar daily. After 11 weeks of study none of them were diabetics.

By no means this is the only study conducted. Many studies have been conducted before and the result were always the same.

What is the best way to treat diabetes?

The straight answer is this disease can be treated by following a very simple diet, very low in fat and high in fiber. Don’t forget diet alone is insufficient, daily exercises should be in your schedule too.

It is very crucial to lower the amount of fat, oil and grease in the diet. A person with type II diabetic who decrease fat to about 10% of total calories in daily meal could reduce blood sugar to a normal level within 8 weeks. Many of them eventually could get off diabetic medication totally.

Natural cure for diabetes is in the food. Evidently diabetes could be prevented with simple diet of nutritious meals.

How to maintain a steady blood sugar level naturally?

Natural food and food that are rich in fiber could help to reduce the fluctuations of blood sugar level. When foods without fiber components are eaten, blood sugar level quickly shoot up and that’s why insulin is used to counteract the reaction.

Processed foods, soft drinks and junk snacks are high in calories but low in fiber, could also lead to high blood sugar level. On the other hand high fiber foods smooth out blood sugar fluctuations and stabilize energy levels.

Active physical exercise acts as an insulin like reaction. It burns up excess blood sugar and fatty acids more rapidly.

The most recommended lifestyles changes for diabetic is of course losing excess body weight. Obesity is the most common non genetic factor that lead to diabetes.

Of course low fat diet, high fiber foods and exercises are great components of natural cure for diabetes.

by Denny Bodoh

What are the main causes of cold sores? In this short article you will discover the most common cold sore sources. What is the secret cause of cold sores for you?

You may have heard of these as causes of cold sores – physical and mental stress, fever, sun and cold weather. They are not the direct causes of cold sores however.

They are cold sore triggers. People believe these are causes of cold sores because you will generally get an outbreak soon after you experience one of these triggers.

These triggers cause your body to change and be less resistant to the cold sore virus.

Basically, every cold sore, oral herpes or fever blister ulcer is caused by the herpes simplex virus – type 1 or type 2. It hides in your nerve root cells.

Under the right conditions, the herpes virus becomes active, moving to the surface. There it enters the nerve cells – destroying them as it creates new virus.

Since the herpes virus lives in the nervous system, it can sense the slightest changes in your body caused by the cold sore triggers mentioned above.

Here are the top three causes of cold sores. These conditions of your body will encourage cold sore virus activity.

1. LOW pH.

The acid or alkaline state of your body is its pH balance. The pH scale runs from 1 through 14 – below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkaline. Your optimal pH is 7.35, which is slightly alkaline.

As long as your body is alkaline (above 7pH) you will rarely get a cold sore. Should your pH drop into the acid zone, the herpes virus could easily activate. Of all the causes of cold sores, this is the top one.

Stress causes cold sores because it causes an acid change in your body. Illness, injury and winter weather also can lower your pH level. These triggers cause hormone and protein changes that create an acid environment.

Coffee, soda and alcohol lower pH and causes cold sores in many people. Meats like pork and beef will do so also. Most vegetables are alkaline when digested. You must keep your diet in balance to prevent a cold sore event.

Without a doubt, a low pH is the main cause of cold sores. The next two are also causes of cold sores. Combining these with a low pH makes you a sure target for another cold sore.

2. LYSINE AND ARGININE OUT OF BALANCE.

Arginine is a protein and the main ingredient used for creation of the herpes simplex virus. If no arginine is available, the herpes replication process cannot occur and no cold sore will happen.

Your nerve cells store arginine in a specific area. Lysine shares this storage area. Flooding your cells with lysine forces the cell to push arginine out to make room for the extra lysine.

Your cells cannot use lysine to create new herpes virus or cause cold sores. The more arginine you replace with lysine, the fewer cold sore outbreaks you will experience.

Taking lysine supplements is the most common way folks get enough lysine to prevent cold sores.

3. VITAMINS AND MINERALS.

The power of your immune system – and the strength of your antibodies – is dependant on the nutrients you take in. In particular you need proper quantities of minerals and vitamins.

A feeble immune system causes cold sores. It would be wise, especially if you get frequent cold sore outbreaks, to get a good supply of vitamins and minerals from food and supplement every day.

Today we do not get enough vitamins and minerals from food alone. Even the American Medical Association agrees. If you are serious about avoiding cold sore outbreaks, take the highest quality multi-vitamin you can find.

Calcium is very high importance in cold sore avoidance. It is the main mineral used by your body to keep your body alkaline. Cold sore victims should take large doses of calcium.

As you have discovered in this article, the main causes of cold sores are an acid pH, high levels of arginine in your cells and a weak immune system.

Stress of any sort lowers your pH balance to an acid environment. And stress, both physical and mental, will burn up large amount of vitamins thus weakening your immune system.

There is more you should know but hopefully, this article has helped you discover, and eliminate, the main causes of cold sores in your life.

A lot of us have heard a lot about breast cancer, but what exactly is it? Breast cancer is a lump of cells that rapidly grow and divide in various parts of the breast and breast tissue. 80% of breast cancer is formed in the hollow areas of the mammary ducts, the other 20% occurs in the lobules. Cancerous tumors usually grow very slowly and can actually be present for 10 years before being detectable by a self examination. However, a lump does not necessarily mean you have evasive cancer. It is very important to understand the difference between carcinoma in situ and invasive breast cancer.

Carcinoma in situ is an abnormal cell growth/development inside either the milk ducts or the lobules without spreading to surrounding tissue, hence the term “in situ” which means “in place”. As long as the abnormal cells remain in the milk ducts or lobules the condition is classified as carcinoma in situ. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) are the two primary sub-categories that we will examine.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the growth of abnormal cells that are isolated in hollow areas of the mammary ducts and have not spread to surrounding tissues. However these abnormal cells look very similar to the cells that compose invasive cancer. DCIS can still turn into invasive cancer if it is not detected therefore it is very important to perform frequent self examinations.

LCIS is a disease where abnormal cell growth takes place in the hollow areas of the lobules. LCIS differs from DCIS in the fact that LCIS cells do not have the potential to become invasive cancer. However, women that have LCIS are at a much higher risk of getting invasive cancer.

If these abnormal cells in the mammary ducts or the lobules spread outside of that area, the disease is reclassified as invasive cancer. Invasive cancer has the ability to spread outside the origin area and affect the surrounding breast tissue, lungs, liver, and bones. Early detection is imperative to ensure a more successful treatment probability. Success rates dramatically decline as cases progress without treatment.

If a woman finds a lump, it is extremely important to get it checked out, the odds of it being invasive cancer is about 20%. She can do this by either getting a mammogram or a biopsy. The mammogram will provide additional information about the size and severity of the tumor. And if necessary, a biopsy will be taken, which can give a physician definitive answers on what type of cancer and its severity.

by C-P

The frightening part about teenage alcoholism and teenage drug abuse, is how young the kids today are that are becoming addicted. Seeing kids of 11-13 in rehab centers being treated for addiction is not unusual

It’s not easy being a teenager. Trying to fit in, make sense of yourself and the changes you’re going through, the pressures of school – plus really starting to take an active interest in the opposite sex, make it a difficult time.

The teenagers of today are also being exposed to far more, far earlier, because of the media and MTV type culture we now live in. Sex, drugs and alcohol are possibly not regarded as ‘out of bounds’ subjects as they were 15-20 years ago.

And with the usual experimentation that happens at that age anyway, you now have kids of 10 trying drugs and alcohol. The problem is that at that age, you just don’t have the maturity to deal with that and so it will create problems.

To pin the increase in teenage drug abuse and alcoholism down to any one point is impossible though. There are just too many variables at play.

Greater exposure at a younger age and so experimenting sooner as I mentioned briefly above, mixed in with a large dose of peer pressure, certainly play a significant role. One tends to do a lot of dumb stuff when you’re young, with alcohol and drug abuse obviously a part of that for many.

I wonder too about the standard of parenting, not being possibly what it was, playing a role? More and more single parent families, parents that work longer hours, and higher than ever divorce rates – have a massive effect on teenagers, who then turn to drugs and alcohol to escape their pain, insecurity and confusion.

One of the most significant reasons I believe however, for the escalating problem of teenage alcoholism and teenage drug abuse, is simply how easy it is for teenagers today to get hold of alcohol, and drugs, especially. Highly addictive and dangerous drugs like heroin and crack are just simply so easy to come by, which definitely wasn’t always the case. These days drug dealers even deliver to your door!

Fighting the battle of teenage drug abuse and teenage alcoholism is getting harder and harder. Providing a loving and stable home environment is the most important, and in reality, the only thing a parent can really do. You can only do so much as a parent – and then hope that it will be enough.

As we age, mental function will usually decrease, and one will have difficulty learning new things. In Alzheimer’s disease, this forgetfulness goes a step further in negatively impacting one’s daily life and the lives around them. For this reason, identifying the early signs of Alzheimer’s is a mostly subjective process, which depends on one’s [personal perspective and how well they know the individual with the disease. A medical professional will be able to conclusively diagnose Alzheimer’s, but here are some of the signs of the disorder that might make you realize it is time for you or your loved one to get checked out.

Generally, those with Alzheimer’s will have a much more difficult time with memory recall than the average aging person. While everyone has senior moments as their age progresses, moments which are frequent and impact one’s daily life negatively can be a sign of a larger problem. Since recognizing this illness is mostly a subjective process, it is important to obtain the involvement of a loved one, who can recognize serious changes in behavior.

Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease can also dress inappropriately for the current situation. For example, they can wear incorrect clothing to a social function or too little clothing in the winter months.

Showers can be dangerous for this reason, and one may sit for hours in a cold bathtub and obtain hypothermia.

Those with Alzheimer’s disease may have a hard time remembering to pay their bills or mortgage note on time. In addition, they may lack impulse control when it comes to spending money, making foolish decisions. Control can be improved through therapy, which should allow one to maintain a reasonable level of activity.

Listlessness is a common symptom in those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and as a result, someone suffering from this illness may sit and listen to a radio for hours at a time. They will typically spend their time doing non-demanding activities such as staring out a window or sleeping in more than is normal for that person.

Common in Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss can also be a problem. One forgets tasks more and more frequently as time progresses. They also may forget names or appointments on a regular basis, and persons with severe Alzheimer’s disease can become disoriented and not remember how they got to a place or where they are going.

With so many signs of Alzheimer’s disease, it can be difficult to make sure that your loved one has the disorder. Since recognizing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s is a subjective process, it is important to spot problem behaviors and realize that they may be a sign of a greater problem. Early detection is critical to a proper treatment plan, so one should set up a doctor’s appointment without delay if they are concerned.
